The plugs

Which plug for your car?

Four plugs share Canada's public chargers. Check your car's: an adapter can open up other chargers.

  • Fast charging · direct current

    CCS (Combo 1)

The fast-charging plug of most recent electric cars: a J1772 plug with two large direct-current pins underneath.

    On 2,652 chargers in Canada

  • Fast or Level 2

    NACS (Tesla, SAE J3400)

Tesla's plug, now the North American standard: more and more automakers are adopting it. Some Tesla chargers are open to every brand, others are not: check access on the charger's page.

    On 1,098 chargers in Canada

  • Fast charging · direct current

    CHAdeMO

The older Japanese fast-charging plug (the Nissan Leaf, for example). It is becoming rarer on new chargers.

    On 1,879 chargers in Canada

  • Level 2 · alternating current

    J1772 (Type 1)

The standard Level 2 plug in North America. Almost every electric car accepts it, Teslas with their adapter.

Level 2 or fast charging?

Two ways to charge

Level 2

Alternating current · about 3 to 19 kW

The everyday charger: at work, at the grocery store, at a restaurant, at the hotel. Allow several hours for a good charge: it is made for plugging in while you do something else.

Fast charging (DCFC)

Direct current · 50 kW and up, as high as 350 kW

For the road: in roughly twenty minutes to an hour, depending on the car, the battery and the cold, you get a good part of your range back.

The power shown is the charger's: your car may accept less.

Gazo doesn't know whether a charger is free right now

No open source publishes charger occupancy in real time. Gazo shows you where chargers are, their plugs, their power and their rate when it is published, but not whether someone is already plugged in. Only the "temporarily out of service" status reported by Natural Resources Canada is shown, with its date.

And what does charging cost?

Gazo shows the rate when the network publishes it (Circuit électrique publishes its own), otherwise the source's rate text, and "Free" when the source says so. Gazo never makes up an amount.

The networks

Who runs the chargers?

In the Gazo app

Charging mode

In Gazo, tap "Charging" next to Regular, Premium and Diesel: the chargers around you appear on the list and on the map, with their plugs and power.

  • The chargers around you, on the list and on the map
  • Filters: plug, power, network, free only
  • The full page: plugs, charging ports, access, hours, rate
  • "Go" in one tap to Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps

Free, like the rest of the app: charging mode is not part of Gazo+.

Questions

EV charging, plainly

See the full FAQ
How many public EV charging stations are there in Canada?

Gazo lists 15,763 public EV charging stations in Canada, including 2,965 fast chargers, for 42,982 charging ports, across 12 provinces and territories. The most common networks: ChargePoint, FLO, Circuit électrique. Sources: Natural Resources Canada, Circuit électrique and OpenStreetMap, updated daily.

Does Gazo show whether a charger is free?

No. No open source publishes charger occupancy in real time: Gazo shows you where chargers are, their plugs, their power and their rate when it is published, but not whether someone is already plugged in. Only the "temporarily out of service" status reported by Natural Resources Canada is shown, with its date. For occupancy, the network's own app remains the reference.

Are there free EV chargers?

Yes: 1,306 of the 15,763 public chargers are free according to their source. Each charger page says whether it is free or paid when the source says so, with the rate if it is published. On site, paid parking may apply.

Which plug does my car need?

For Level 2, almost every electric car plugs into a J1772 (Teslas with their adapter). For fast charging, most recent cars use CCS; Tesla and a growing number of automakers use NACS; a few older models, CHAdeMO. In the app, filter chargers by plug.

Does charging mode cost anything?

No. Charging mode is free, like the gas search: list, map, charger pages and "Go". Gazo+ only removes ads and adds extras for gas.
